Farm sheds away from the boundary
Toowoomba Regional Council says a rural shed used for an on-site farm use (machinery, hay or produce grown on the property) can be accepted development when every part of it is more than 200 metres from each allotment boundary. Closer than that, or on a residential lot, the shed needs a building approval through a certifier. Planning approval for a material change of use is a separate question again.
Up the Range: wind, cold and slope
Toowoomba and Highfields sit on the Great Dividing Range, several hundred metres above the Lockyer Valley. Exposed ridgelines can carry a higher wind classification than the valley floor, and winter nights on the Downs are cold (Oakey's July mean minimum is 3.0 °C), which matters for enclosed workshops as much as for houses.
Growth spread across many towns
The council's 2023 growth plan expects about 66,500 more residents by 2051, spread between the city, Highfields and the rural townships. That means everything from garages behind infill townhouses in Toowoomba to four-bedroom homes in Highfields and machinery sheds outside Clifton and Millmerran.
