Start with what the shed has to hold
The right size is set by the biggest thing going inside and how you will move around it. A boat on a trailer needs length and a clear door opening; a workshop needs bench space, power and light; storage needs racking depth and a way to reach the back.
We work from that list rather than a standard size. Tell us the vehicles, equipment and activities, and we suggest a footprint, wall height and door layout to suit, then adjust it to what your block and budget allow.
Styles and finishes
Residential sheds are usually gable or skillion roofed, clad in COLORBOND® or ZINCALUME® steel, with roller doors, a personal access door and windows placed where you need them. Colours can be matched to the house roof or chosen to sit back into the garden.
Awnings, skylights, insulation and whirlybirds are common additions. Each one changes the engineering and the price, so we add them to the design rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
Kit or built
You can take the shed as a kit with engineering drawings, fasteners and assembly instructions, and build it yourself or with your own builder. Or our team can build it for you anywhere in our Queensland service area, including the slab if you need one.
Either way the design is the same. The quote lists exactly what is supplied and what is built, so you can compare like with like.
Approvals on a house block
Most residential sheds need a building approval. Queensland's Building Regulation 2021 exempts only very small Class 10 buildings (for example no more than 10 m² in plan area and 2.4 m high, with no side longer than 5 m, outside the tropical cyclone region), and even an exempt shed must still meet the building standards and the council's planning scheme.
Siting close to a boundary, the total roofed area on the lot and any overlays can all affect the approval. We can prepare the paperwork and work with a building certifier for you through our council approvals service.

Design considerations
- Wind rating for your address
- Wind actions are worked out for the site to AS/NZS 1170.2 or AS 4055. Geoscience Australia's indicative map places most of South East Queensland in non-cyclonic Region B, but the engineer confirms the design wind speed for your lot, taking in terrain and shielding.
- Boundary clearances
- Under the Queensland Development Code, a Class 10a shed may sit inside the side or rear boundary clearance only within limits, including a height of no more than 4.5 m (mean height 3.5 m) and no more than 9 m of building along any one boundary. The Queensland Housing Code, which began on 1 September 2026, is being phased in council by council, so your certifier confirms which rules apply.
- Near the coast
- BlueScope's selection guide sets minimum distances from breaking surf and marine water for each cladding product. Tell us if the block is near the coast so we can specify the right material and fasteners; stainless steel fasteners are not compatible with COLORBOND® or ZINCALUME® steel.
- Condensation and insulation
- Metal roofs can drip condensation on cool nights, especially over a workshop or stored vehicles. BlueScope recommends dealing with it at the design stage, typically with a roof blanket or vapour-barrier membrane, so decide early if the shed will house anything that must stay dry.
- Slab and footings
- The engineering drawings set the footing and slab design for the shed, and the site classification of your soil can change it. Reactive clay sites (class H, E or P) need the footing designed to AS 2870 rather than the standard housing tables.

Residential sheds: common questions
Do I need council approval for a backyard shed in Queensland?
Usually, yes. Only very small Class 10 buildings are exempt from building approval, and even then the shed must meet the building standards and your council's planning scheme. Your certifier or council confirms what applies to your block, and we can prepare the approval paperwork.
Can I build the shed myself?
Yes. We supply residential sheds as kits with engineering drawings, fasteners and step-by-step instructions, and we are a phone call away during the build. If the work is valued over $11,000 you will need a QBCC owner-builder permit.
What colours can I choose?
Sheds can be clad in COLORBOND® steel colours or unpainted ZINCALUME® steel, and doors and trims can be chosen to match the house. We confirm the available colours with your quote.
Can you build the slab as well?
Yes, in our Queensland service area. The slab is designed from the shed's engineering drawings, and it is listed separately in the quote so you can see its cost.
How big can my shed be?
It depends on the block, the siting rules and the approval. Tell us what you need to store or park, and we will suggest a size that fits your block and the rules that apply to it.
What warranty comes with the shed?
Warranty terms are set out in your quote. BlueScope also offers material warranties on eligible COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® steel products, subject to application and eligibility.
