Lockyer Sheds designs and supplies steel farm sheds for Queensland properties: open-bay machinery and hay sheds, fully enclosed storage sheds and livestock shelters, engineered for the site and the way you work. Sheds are supplied as kits or built by our QBCC-licensed team from our Crowley Vale head office in the Lockyer Valley.

Open bay, enclosed or both
Open-front sheds are quick to drive in and out of and suit machinery and hay. Enclosed sheds keep out dust, rain and theft, and suit workshops, fertiliser and valuable gear. Many farm sheds combine both: enclosed bays with roller doors beside open bays.
We lay the shed out around the machinery: clear height for the tallest cab or elevator, bay widths for the widest implement, and door openings that suit how you reverse in.
Built for open country
Sheds in open paddocks see more wind than sheds sheltered by houses and trees, and open fronts let that wind in under the roof. The engineering accounts for the site's exposure and the open bays, and the footings are designed for the soil.
Options that make a working shed
Sliding doors or roller doors, skylights for daylight, ventilation, mezzanine storage and awnings for extra cover are all available. We add them in the design so the frame is engineered for them.

Farm sheds are supplied as engineered kits for you or your contractor to erect, or built by our team anywhere in our Queensland service area, with the slab if you want one.

Design considerations
- How the building is classified
- A shed used to store a tractor may be a Class 10a building. Larger farm buildings, or ones where people work, may be Class 7 or 8. In Queensland, QDC MP 3.7 (farm buildings and vehicle storage farm sheds) replaces the NCC's farm-shed provisions. Your certifier confirms the classification.
- Rural exemption
- The Building Regulation 2021 exempts a Class 10 building on land used for agricultural, horticultural or pastoral purposes from the building assessment provisions when no part is within 200 m of a road or a boundary of the land. Check with your certifier or council before relying on it.
- What goes inside matters
- BlueScope notes that animal housing, fertiliser, heavy dust, moisture and chemicals can make standard COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® steel unsuitable. Tell us what the shed will store so the cladding is specified for it.
- Importance level
- The NCC gives farm buildings and farm sheds as examples of Importance Level 1 structures, which affects the design wind loads. The engineer confirms the level for your shed and its distance from other buildings and roads.
- Owner-builder limits
- QBCC lists farm buildings among the commercial and industrial buildings owner-builders cannot build, and sets a separate value threshold below which a farm building can be built without a permit. Above that threshold a licensed contractor must do the work.

Farm sheds: common questions
Do farm sheds need council approval in Queensland?
Often, but not always. A Class 10 building on agricultural land with no part within 200 m of a road or boundary is exempt from the building assessment provisions. Planning rules can still apply, so confirm with your certifier or council.
How big should my machinery shed be?
Start from your biggest machine: its height (including cab, exhaust and any elevators), width and length, then add room to walk around it and to grow. Send us the machinery list and we will suggest a size.
Can I build a farm shed myself?
You can buy it as a kit, but QBCC limits what owners can build: above the value threshold QBCC sets for farm buildings, a licensed contractor must do the work. We can build it for you anywhere in our Queensland service area.
Open front or enclosed?
Open fronts suit machinery and hay you access every day; enclosed bays suit workshops, fertiliser and valuables. Many farm sheds mix both, which we design bay by bay.
Can the shed house livestock?
Yes, with the right design. Animal housing affects ventilation and the cladding material, so tell us early.
Do you deliver to rural properties?
Yes. We deliver kits to rural properties and build farm sheds anywhere in our Queensland service area. Give us the property address and access details so we can plan the delivery.
